In our country, chopsticks and spoon go hand-in-hand. Spoon is the master (主), and chopsticks are the servant (從). It's okay to go without chopsticks, but without spoon rice cannot be consumed. Frankly, in the traditional society, the peasants and women used only the spoon. Slaves cannot use chopsticks. Chopsticks were eating tools found only on the dining tables of the ruling/intellectual elite. It was sufficient just to produce spoons for the average class. Wherever spoon was found, there must be a pair of chopsticks to complement it. Since spoons were made from metals, it followed that its partner should be too. Spoons and chopsticks were two items of a set. If they were made from different materials, they would not match. Iron chopsticks developed the culture of spoons. Therefore, Korea, unlike that of Japan and China, preserved its tradition of stainless steel chopsticks.
